The Third World Committee meets on the first Tuesday of every month, in the Pastoral Centre, following 7pm Mass. The purpose of this group is to raise money, through parish events and donations, to help selected projects in other parts of the world where a need has been identified.
Currently, the projects which we support are as follows: The Medical Sisters of St. Joseph in Kerala, South-West India, who run a hospital and a hospice, as well as educating children in their own settlements.
The Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, who offer medical and educational support to the poor by providing food, schools, hospitals and health centres.
The Missionary Sisters of Mary in Fiji, who look after all aspects of life for the poor, sick and disenfranchised – regularly distributing food.
As well as helping to provide important basic needs and necessities – sometimes lost or destroyed by floods or other disasters – these charities also help with every aspect of education. When the children receive rudimentary education, such as reading, writing and simple arithmetic, this can have a positive impact on life for the whole family, not merely for the children. The Priests and Sisters of each charity also look after the religious and spiritual needs of the people in their care.
In addition to supporting the above charities, support is also offered to other projects from time to time. We have helped towards the building of a new chapel in Fr. John's home village, as well as providing beds and tables for a project in isolated rural India.
Fund-raising events include:
Soup Supper Evening – Second Friday after Ash Wednesday and Family Fast Friday in October
Plant Sale – during May each year
Curry Evening – usually twice each year
Musical evenings – usually just before Christmas
Chinese Meal – a new event which will be held on in February
This is a non-profit-making organisation and all donations are passed on to the charities as soon as possible. New members are always welcome.
